DANGEROUS COMPONENTS OF A SHISHA SMOKE

With the ban imposed on Shisha manufacture, sale and use in Kenya, debates have come up on the exact dangers that shisha users are exposed to. However Medics have confined some of the highly dangerous components of Shisha that are so harmful to human body. They are;

1. CARBON MONOXIDE.
 This is produced by the charcoal burnt from the shisha pot. It is a silent killer that when inhaled, it replaces oxygen in the blood hence killing cells and denying important organs of the body access to oxygen. Carbon monoxide can also lead to brain damage, heart problems and major organ dysfunction.

2. NICOTINE.
It is produced by the burning tobacco. It is the largest component of tobacco and it is responsible for addiction. When taken in large quantities it reduces immune response and poses negative impacts on the reproductive health. It also affects the cell proliferation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, DNA mutation by various mechanisms which leads to cancer.

3. COBALT METALS.
It has also been realized that shisha contains traces of cobalt metals. When the body is exposed to cobalt, it interferes with essential body organs like the  liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, the skeleton and skeletal muscles.
Intake may also lead to disruption of homeostasis which causes oxidative stress, DNA damage, and serious degenerative diseases.

4. LEAD METALS
It is a heavy metal that affects the brain, liver, kidney and bones. It brings about headaches, and memory problems. It also affects unborn the foetus is the user is expectant. It also causes diseases like anaemia, Cardiovascular Disease like high blood pressure and delayed development.

Most users have argued that the effects of shisha are similar to those of smoking cigarette. But it is quite clear that the presence of heavy matals makes it more dangerous.
