A UNIVERSITY OF OUR TIME
Universities as established in the 6th century were ment to be the apex of any educational system. They were to be producers of knowledge but not consumers of knowledge. In Kenya, each pioneer university was established with specific goals and objectives that when achieved, would be helpful to the country. However the expansion of university education to reduce wastage rate at form four has done ravage than good.
Today, most universities have produced several incompetent graduates. Half baked. Naive graduates who cannot apply the skills that they were taught. Universities are consumers of knowledge. Fake professors who are good only at quoting other scholars yet they do no research and write no papers to contribute in the scholarly world. Universities are making no innovations.
We have roadside universities offering fake degree programmes. They have no facilities to offer the intended courses and they are only systems of money making.
They lure students with decorated names and courses and defraud students who have been made to believe that a university degree is everything in the corporate world. After four years, a university with no furnished library, no laboratory and other essential facilities would preside over a fake but a very colorful graduation ceremony for students who are unaware of their illiteracy until they meet their employers.
Today, a university is a stumping ground of all all sorts of social immorality. Drug abuse, promiscuity and it is where dishonesty recides. Students cheat in exams while some get sexualy transmitted degrees. Students lack integrity and everything seems to be normal. Missing marks are everywhere and nobody seem to be caring.
Recently they have been dabbed as institutions of higher tribalism. Universities practice tribalism and negative ethnicity than any other public institution. Employment is done ethnically, awards ethnically and tenders ethnically. They rely very little on merit and people involved are comfortable with this worrying trend.
There is hope that one day things will change to the better. The good reputation of our universities will be reclaimed. People from the universities will be respected again. But before that, students must research on inside stories of universities before joining else he wastes his four years.
