FAMOUS AFRICAN PRESIDENTS WHO HAD BYNAMESBYNAMES



1. DANIEL TOROITICH ARAP MOI. - NYAYO   He was the second president of the republic of Kenya from 1978 to 2002. When he became the president, he promised that he would follow the footsteps of the founding father and his predisessor Jomo Kenyatta. The name nyayo is a Swahili word for footsteps.

2. JULIOUS KAMBARAGE NYERERE - MWALIMU. He is famously known as Mwalimu Julious Nyerere. He is the founding father of Tanzania. He is called mwalimu because he was a professional teacher before venturing into politics. He was a graduate teacher from Makerere University in Uganda.

3. JOSEPH DESIRE MOBUTU - MOBUTU SESE SEKO. Mobutu was the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo from 1965. As a way to Africanize Congo ( Kinsasha) Mobutu changed his real name Joseph Desire to Mobutu Sese Seko Koko Ngbendu Wa Za Banga , which means "The all-powerful warrior who, because of his endurance and inflexible will to win, will go from conquest to conquest, leaving fire in his wake" in 1972.

4. RAS TAFARI MAKONNEN - HAILE SELLASIE. He was the Ethiopian Emperor from 1930 to 1974. The name Haile Selassie was given to him at his infant baptism and adopted again as part of his                                    to regnal name in 1930. He was also called the Lion of Judah
                                      and His Imperial Majesty by his Ras Tafari Movement.












5. ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA - NELSON MADIBA/ MANDELA. He was the first president if South Africa. He acquired the name Nelson form his school teacher while the name Madiba from his thembu clan which named him after a famour chief from the clan. The name is used to signify endearment and respect.

6. IDDI AMIN -,DADA. The famous Ugandan Dictator ruled from 1971 to 1979. During his regine he gave himself several names like His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular. V.C to mean Victoria Cross, D.S.O- Distinguished Service Order, M.C Military Cross.
