THE OTHER SIDE OF RAILA ODINGA
Known as the peoples president. An enigma. The father of Kenyan Democracy. Raila Amolo Odinga, the son of Oginga and Mary Ajuma. He has had the most humiliating moments in Kenyan politics since independence. His efforts for good governance has never paid off. He keeps pressing on but what exactly is Raila Odinga made of? What are his proficiencies and inanities?
As seen in his unending career, Odinga and other notable elites ensured that Kenya regains multy party democracy in 1991 through dangerous street protests and riots that ensured that Moi gives in to the peoples demands.
Devolution that has ensured that development is spread all over regions in Kenya was originally Odinga's idea. It was first crafted in ODM manifesto in 2007 when he promised that he would deliver a new constitution during his tenure. This became a reality in 2010 with the inauguration of the new constitution though under a coalition government. Apart from these it is Raila who has unearthed several huge corruption scandals in Kenyan government.
But wait. Whats the other side of Raila Odinga? As Kijana Wamalwa once described him, Odinga is a man loved and hated on equal measure. A Kenyan is either a Raiamaniac or Railaphorbic. Why should one develop a Railaphorbia? There are some of his actions that have potrayed Raila as a dictator and a man that lacks statesmanship.
During his political career, Odinga has misured his magnetism. He has used his influence to morbilize crowds for protests which have been fatal. So many people have died in his name. He has made people to warship him. The Railamaniacs are never rational. Not all political disagreements should be solved in the streets especially when we have a reckless police force.
"Odingas takes it all" is another thing that has seriously destroyed Odinga's reputation. In 2013, Odinga's sister wanted to be the governor for Kisumu, his brother wanted to be the MP for Bondo, his cousin the MP for Gem and finally Odinga the president. Its democratically acceptable but not moral at all. Again, we have heared several lamentations on ODM party nominations which are never credible. Party loyalists are rewarded at the expense of the people's choices.
As time goes, Railamania and Railaphobia will continue to exist. Because no man is perfect. In politics, today you're a hero and tomorrow an enemy. Odinga is like a scrapbooking paper with one side of the page different from that on the other side.
