INSIDE NYAYO TORTURE CHAMBERS
The journey to the second liberation of Kenya was not a walk in the park. People suffered. Liberators were anguished. Freedom fighters were treated callously and most of them have remained with physical injuries to date. Here are some of the activities that took place inside this torture room that was used to silence any government critique in the 80s.
Stripped Cross-examination
After an arrest and taken into the room for examination, the victim was interrogated by the servicemen while naked. During the interrogation, the officers would inflict pain on any part of the body when the victim refused to cooperate.
Murky Chambers
Poorly lit. No lights. The victims were subjected to several days and months of darkness that some came out visually impaired. This also kept secret the identities of the torture officers whom, to date have known names but nobody can recognize them. Nobody has their images and nobody can even explain their physical appearances.
Water Torture
The victims had water poured on their faces or heads in order to invoke the instinctive fear for drowning. Others were placed in water baths with extremely cold temperatures for several days. They also used forced ingestion of water.
The Rack
The unlucky men and were laid on a rack with the neck, hands and legs tied with a chain. During the cross examination the victims were knocked on the joints and the chains were tightened. This made the victims have physical injuries like broken limbs.
These were dark days but Kenya has moved a thousand miles from the days. We must take time and remember with honor the men who made sure that we are here now, enjoying freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and many others.
